Northampton Hockey Academy is for 13-17 year olds and is an extra training sessions for a smaller group of young players with the highest potential who in the coaches eyes can progress to Performance Centre/Talent Academies if they are given an extra high intensity session per week.

It is  7.00 to 8.30 on Wednesdays, in groups of max 16, with two coaches per group, costing £6 per session although you committ to the whole block. Bookings will be via the booking website we use for camps, a booking link will be sent to those invited. There will be 4 blocks

  • Block 1 – (5 weeks) - 29th September to 3rd November
  • Block 2 – (5) weeks – 10th November to 15th December
  • Block 3 – (6 weeks) – 5th January to 9th February
  • Block 4 – (6 weeks) – 23rd February to 13th April

How do I fit this in with my team and age group training?

If you are selected to train in the academy you are advised to train in the adult training group, you are selected for in addition to the academy and if you are U14 then you are not required to train with the u14s whilst in an academy block and hence training for three sessions a week. (We will not stop you from doing so but we don’t want to overload you).

Who is making the decision on academy players?

The lead coaches Jonno and Paddy with feedback from club coaches and U14 (Jack , Ant, Chris) and U12 coaches (Ant, James and Kathryn and Max).

Nigel Down chairs the process and is your first point of call for queries and is happy to have a discussion about your child on 07876742054

What are the selection criteria?

We are looking at the players with the most ability across the age groups 13-17, this is a very difficult assessment and is always going to a matter of some debate. This is not based on who the strongest players are as an average 17 year old will perform better than a talented 13 year old, we are looking at players based on their growth potential. So some 13 year olds will be invited over some 17 year olds.

What can I do to best position myself to be offered a place in the Academy. England Hockey have produced a document called the Talent Development Framework which details successful player qualities, you can work on these -

Fitness – Here is a document which details the levels of fitness work top players work towards and then maintain – you should be working towards these from age 13 to 15 and then extending your fitness levels - EH Conditioning programe

Please note these are not a “tick list” to being selected but they will make you better players, players in the academy will not have all of these attributes but will be working towards them

EH Talent Development Programme - this covers attributes such as

  • Fast
  • Physically, Emotionally and Mentally Durable
  • Physically Literate
  • Intelligent Trainers
  • Self-Managers
  • Motivated and Driven
  • Able to Cope with Pressure
  • Self-Aware Learners
  • Able to work with Others
