Men’s Masters win at Old Sils
Old Sils Masters 2 Northampton Saints Masters 3
Saints travelled to Old Sils with a small squad to take on a younger Old Sils outfit (masters in Birmingham area is over 35). Saints although losing Fluff for a period of the first half due to a facial injury controlled the first 20 minutes and led through a mazy solo effort from Steve Morris – ghosting past defenders and slotting in coolly past the Old Sils keeper. As the first half continued the game got stretched and the younger legs of the Old Sils started to cause problems in the Saints defence. Saints were indebted to a number of fine saves from Gavin Lyon to maintain the lead but eventually Old Sils equalized just before half time. Half time talk was all about shape, ball control and positions – amazingly for a Saints side we stuck to it in the second half.
Saints took the lead with a well worked short corner expertly despatched by new Master Pete De Lange – and it was somewhat against the run of play when old Sils equalized with 10 minutes to go. There was still time for one final sting in the tail with minutes remaining a deflected shot parried by the keeper was coolly slotted home by Saints old boy Gary Pedler. What he was doing in the area nobody knows – had he actually got back from the half time team talk who knows…..still a win is a win!! Great game, usual Old Sils excellent hospitality always played in the right spirit.
