International Call-Ups for Saints Players

Published by on

Congratulations and best of luck to ladies first eleven keeper Bex “T-Rex Howitt” and central midfielder Caz McCabe who have made it through to the England Masters squads for the Over 35s and Over 45s teams!

Caz has been selected to represent England at the Home Nations Cup in June and at the Masters World Cup in South Africa in October. Bex is also in the England squad which is cut to the final 18 after April 24th. Fingers crossed that we have an amazing Saints goalkeeper representing England this year!

Ian McIlwaine is also in the frame for England selection at the Masters World Cup in Cape Town. Asked about how to get involved, Ian recommended visiting the England Hockey Masters Facebook page. With squads in all age ranges from over 35s to over 80s, and everything in between, there are opportunities for masters at all ages.

“Masters hockey is a big growth area for hockey and a great opportunity for mature players to play with like-minded individuals and I would encourage everybody to join in and challenge themselves without having to chase 18 year-olds round the pitch every Saturday!”

“Having said that, fitness is key, and this is tested at selection and in the build-up to tournaments. So if you have the motivation and enthusiasm to keep performing at a competitive level, then I can highly recommend getting involved.”

Selection is based on regional trials, and contacts are available at https://www.englandhockey.co.uk/international/international-masters

So with Caz, Bex and Ian making great progress, and a number of other players getting involved, including Simon Chambers with the Scottish squad, Northampton Saints really are on the map for supporting and fielding quality world class players.

We wish them all the best of luck.
