Back To Hockey

What is Back to Hockey?

Back to Hockey sessions are coached sessions that provide a gentle introduction or reintroduction to the game. In the sessions, you will be introduced back to the game by mixing in some skills exercises with some small sided game play (eg 5v5, 6v6). However the emphasis is on a friendly and relaxed environment without the pressure to perform. It’s also an opportunity to get fitter, as each Back to Hockey session burns up to 450 calories (netfit.co.uk). B2H sessions attract a mixture of gender and abilities, therefore, we provide something for everyone.

If you would like to take part you first need to fill in the Eng;and Hocke participant agreement below  – England Hockey Participation Agreement

Anna’s Story

“I hadn’t played hockey since I left school in 1989 until I heard about ‘Back to Hockey’ and mustered the courage to go along to a session.

I was apprehensive due to my inexperience but the coaching session was very relaxed. The members were at various levels, ages and experience. The fun had a mildly competitive edge and I was made to feel very welcome and included.

I realised how much I missed playing a team sport and the fitness that brings. Within a few months I found myself playing for the Ladies 4s and the Ladies Masters and attending ladies coaching sessions. Everyone involved has been extremely supportive.

I have a lot to learn and I look forward to playing as much as I can. I hope to increase my fitness, skills and knowledge of the game with the help of the great coaches and continued encouragement of my team mates. “

Paul’s Story

I played hockey for club and county over 14 years ago, however, since then I piled on the pounds to a staggering 20 stone in weight. In April 2016, I enquired with the club regarding Back 2 Hockey training sessions. I received a warm reply from Andy Dale (Club President) with an invitation to Back 2 Hockey training on a Saturday morning. Still at a weight of 17 stone, I was in two minds whether to go, however, I plucked up the courage based on Andy’s welcoming email.

Over the summer of 2016, my motivation kept me in the gym until September 2016 when I attended my first senior club training session. I was greeted by the club president Andy, chairman Jon and club captain Ed all on my first session. I felt welcomed by all including other players and coaches at the time.

In October 2016, I played my first game for Saints 7s, I played every game in the 2016/17 season and became the 7s top goal scorer which was a great achievement. After a brilliant first season, I’ve moved up to become a regular player for Saints 5s. Never in a million years did I ever think I’d be in the position I am now, playing regularly and having lost a total of 8 stone in weight.

B2H was a major stepping stone for me, not only in getting back to playing hockey, but also played a massive part in my personal fitness achievements. In return, I enjoy assisting with club membership, B2H coaching and being Mens 5th XI captain.

I celebrate and champion Back to Hockey sessions to everyone, if I wasn’t coaching them now, I’d still be attending the sessions as they are fun and always have a great group in attendance.

I haven’t played for a while

Don’t worry if your new to the game or haven’t played for a while our Back to Hockey coach will gently guide you through this series of fun and friendly sessions. We will also take into account your level of fitness when planning and delivering each session. The activities you take part in during the session may help you improve your fitness over time.

What should I wear/bring to the session?

Comfortable sports clothing and trainers are best. We provide sticks,  If you have your own stick you are more than welcome to bring it and we would recommend taking a soft drink or bottle of water as well. Shin pads are definitely advisable and a gum shield is not essential to begin with, but bring them both if you have them.

How much does it cost?

£2 per session payable via the above link.

Can I start playing competitively after I have attended a few sessions?

Yes, if you feel you want to play in league games or move on to general club training sessions then you can do so. The coachs encourage B2H members to join club training and teams if they can.

Can I just keep attending the Back to Hockey sessions?

Yes, you can continue to come to the back to Sessions if you don’t feel you want to play in league games

What are the basics of the game?
