What should you expect as a parent?

The training sessions for children 10 and under are designed to be fun with learning included in the session, covering basic athletic skills in addition to hockey specific skills, half of the time will be based around a game where the score is irrelevant, tournaments are run throughout the year with teams of mixed ability and gender with the emphasis again on having fun and learning. We dont have A, B, C teams etc to ensure that every child experiences winning, losing and playing with children of different abilities. Coaches will be emphasing  positive leaning experiences wherever possible.

Under 12  teams are split into boys and girls and are more focused on developing game based skills and coaches will be asking more of the children’s competitive spirit,  the communication style may include, if necessary, elements of negative feedback although the aim is to use this sparingly.

Under 14 teams train as squads and the emphasis is more focused on preparation for competition and coaches will be discussing how to win and players will be expected to embrace a self improvement ethic. From age 12  players will be encouraged where appropriate by their coaches to be playing adult hockey on Saturdays or playing for the development “Badgers “team in the local league.

Match Ethos

Our aim for junior players is that we want to develop their love of the game and skillfull play so that they continue their hockey through teenage years and  adult life so we are focussed on what they learn and how they play rather than results, some children put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform and to avoid losing if your child is anxious then please speak to your lead age group coach.
