Saints Ladies in Early Season Goal Fest

Posted by Joseph Cliffe on 5 October 2022

The Ladies 4s were away at towcester against the team who were relegated into our league for this season. We started strong making lots of progress up the pitch. The opposition had some breaks in the D but as keeper, Laura Wychgel kept the opposition at bay and finished the match with a clean sheet. We won 10-0, with honourable meantion to Stella Grayson, Emma Neville, Ruby Marris, Laura Charles and Eryn Currie who all scored and some had hat tricks! And Big meantion to Phoebe Thomas who was fabulous and got MOM! A fantastic game with lots of excellent play and teamwork!

Ladies 2’s vs Leicester city 4’s

The 2’s were away from home against a Leicester team who had a team of youth and experience, fortunately our youth and experience were superior on the day and speed and skill tormented the opposition and the score flattered them as the number of attempts and countless direct hits onto the post would have made the score line significantly greater. 12-0 it ended with 3 goals a piece for Gracie Horton, Jess Dooley and Millie Richie, 2 from Elise Ramoo and 1 from Hattie Kendrick. Mom surprisingly was split 3 ways today with Katie Fidler, Gracie Horton and Hattie Fordham winning. All round great performance from the team and notable contributions from the youngsters who helped us oldies out!!

Ladies 5s drew 2-2 against an experienced Grammarians side.
Saints caught Grammarians off guard with a goal frome Rose in the opening 20 secs of the game. The young side battled hard & always looked dangerous as they moved forward with speed.
1-1 at half time following a Grammarians short corner strike.
The second half started well with great leading runs from Bea & Cecile. Poppy & Azaria were solid in defence. Hester, Kate & Erin distributed the ball well in midfield.
Cecile scored mid way through the second half following some great team work.
Unfortunately Grammarians scored from another short corner to finish the game with a draw.
A super performance from a young side who will only get better.
Player of the match = Poppy.

Ladies 3s

Tough day at the office for Saints Ladies 3s today, unfortunately losing 11-0 to Market Harborough 1s. Towards the end of the first half we seemed to be settling into the game with a few good runs into the D and a couple of near miss shots at goal but just wasn’t enough for MH who were quick on the attack and had a strong press which we struggled to get the ball through. Really proud of everyone for keeping their spirts up and playing till the very end despite the score. Lots to learn from today which we will take forward into training and next weeks game to come back fighting. MOM - Grace M, Rebecca T & Laura O. DOD - Kathryn W (left the balls, masks and first aid kit at home - woops!).

The Mens 2s travelled to face the Mens 3s at...well, Moulton, in an all Saints grudge match. A hard fought and occasionally physical contest (which was bound to happen! No quarter given by either team) saw both sides creating chances but it was the 2s who eventually emerged victorious. 2 first half goals from Athiq and Hamish and a scrambled home third from Toby in the second half sealed a 3-0 win, the 2s defence holding firm for the second week running.

Unfortunately no games today for the 4s, 5s or 7s as the oppositions couldn’t field their teams.
I can only think that they’re too scared of us.

Therefore the 3 teams decided to meet for a friendly, with a good mix of Skill from the 4s players, experience from the 5s players, and some great hockey from the youthful 7s. Some of which this was their first “Men’s” hockey game!

Not sure on the final score, but nice to have a run around!

Rugby & East Warwick Mens I 1-4 Northampton Saints I

The men's 1s travelled the short distance to local rivals Rugby & East Warwick. In the early fixture of the day in the bright Autumn subshine, the Saints found themselves 1 nil down after 10 minutes. Not to be deterred, they hit back 4 minutes later with a superb counter attack and tight angle finish from Cam Arnold. The scores were level at half time. A fair result at that stage.

The second half was an entertaining affair. No further goals were added in the early part but the Umpires pulled multiple cards out to control the game on both sides. But it was the Saints who struck the vital blow after 50 minutes with a blistering counter attack down the left, ending up with Dan Whittaker scoring an open stick shot from a cute angle. It was a matter of minutes before yet another D to D counter saw Stuart Clark notch on the P spot for his first of the season. Rugby played their part with strong posession but they couldn't break the Saints sturdy defence. And with 5 minutes to go Scott Mahoney scored from a drag flick to seal the 4 - 1 away win.

Despite all the goals, Player of the Match deservedly went to Owen Davies.
